Hyvä Themes spent four years rebuilding the Magento storefront in Tailwind + Alpine. It worked: by 2025 it was the default frontend for new Magento builds. Then Hyvä turned to the admin — the part of Magento merchants actually live in — and started shipping a second product. That product is Hyvä Commerce, and version 1.2 just moved the two biggest pieces of it (Admin Dashboard and Media Optimisation) from beta to general availability.
The product is genuinely useful if you run an SMB or mid-market store on Magento Open Source. It is also genuinely confusing, because Hyvä now has four products with similar names. This guide separates them, explains what 1.2 actually ships, and shows the math behind the “cancel your Cloudinary subscription” claim.
TL;DR — in 6 facts
It is not Hyvä Theme
Hyvä Theme = free Tailwind frontend (OSL3, since Nov 2025). Hyvä Commerce = paid suite of admin + media + CMS modules that sits on top of Magento Open Source.
1.2 just hit GA
Released May 2026. The Admin Dashboard and Media Optimisation suite both moved from beta to general availability after months of merchant testing.
It targets €1M–€100M GMV
Built for SMB and mid-market merchants on Magento Open Source. Above €100M GMV, Hyvä Enterprise (the Adobe Commerce compat tier) takes over.
Media Optimisation replaces paid CDNs
Automatic WebP + AVIF conversion + admin-configurable resizing happens on your own server. No Cloudinary / imgix / Cloudflare Images subscription needed.
Admin Dashboard coexists with default Magento
You can enable Hyvä’s dashboard, Magento’s default, or both. No forced replacement — the framework is designed to live next to existing customisations.
CLI tools for bulk migration
Media Optimisation ships a CLI for batch-converting a 50k-image catalogue to AVIF + WebP overnight. Useful for established stores migrating off paid CDN bills.
The Hyvä product family — 5-year evolution
Hyvä ships four products today. They build on each other, but each one solves a different layer of the Magento stack. Knowing which one you need is half the battle.
What Hyvä Commerce 1.2 actually ships
Six modules. Two moved from beta to GA in 1.2 (Admin Dashboard, Media Optimisation). The rest are either already GA or close to it. All of them are part of the Hyvä Commerce license — you don’t pay extra for any individual module.
Admin Dashboard
New Magento admin landing page with Launchpad shortcuts, Checklist for team to-dos, Links & Text widgets for internal comms, and a Hyvä CMS Scheduled Releases overview. Coexists with the default Magento dashboard — you can toggle either or both.
Media Optimisation
Auto-converts uploaded product images to WebP and AVIF, resizes to admin-configurable max dimensions, and serves the right format per browser. No external API, no subscription, no per-image cost. CLI tools batch-process an existing catalogue.
Hyvä CMS
Page-builder for editorial teams. Tailwind-native, Scheduled Releases workflow, AI Translations (in beta) for multi-language stores. Replaces Magento Page Builder for stores that want a faster editor.
Image Editor
Crop, rotate, brightness, alt-text from the Magento media gallery without bouncing to Photoshop. Edits are non-destructive; Media Optimisation regenerates the WebP / AVIF derivatives downstream.
Checklist
In-admin to-do list shared across the team. Tag items to merchants, devs, or content editors. Useful for launch-day cutover checklists and recurring marketing-campaign workflows.
Launchpad
Customisable shortcut grid on the admin landing screen. Pin the 12 admin URLs each merchant actually touches every day instead of hunting through the left nav. Per-user, persisted.
Admin Dashboard — what GA means for you
The default Magento admin dashboard hasn’t materially changed since 2.0 launched in 2015. Hyvä’s replacement gives every merchant team something useful on the landing screen: a Launchpad for the 12 URLs you actually visit each day, a shared Checklist for cutover tasks and recurring marketing-campaign workflows, and an overview of every Hyvä CMS Scheduled Release that’s pending.
The framework is designed to coexist. You can switch on Hyvä’s dashboard, keep Magento’s default, or run both. Existing admin customisations (the Mageplaza / Amasty / custom-extension widgets you already added) stay where they are.
“The new and default Magento dashboards can be enabled or disabled independently — nothing forces a replacement.” — Hyvä Commerce 1.2 release post, May 2026
Media Optimisation — the Cloudinary-killer
This is the module that pays for the Hyvä Commerce license on its own for most stores. Media Optimisation automatically converts product images to WebP and AVIF, resizes them to admin-configurable max dimensions, and serves the right format based on browser support. It happens on your server — no external service, no API key, no per-image cost.
For an existing catalogue, the suite includes CLI tools for batch operations: point it at the media directory, set worker concurrency, and let it run overnight. A 50,000-image catalogue typically finishes in 6–10 hours on a modest 4-vCPU box.
What 50,000 product images cost per year
Modelled annual cost for a mid-market merchant with a 50k-image catalogue serving ~50TB of image bandwidth per year. The four paid CDN options are all reasonable choices in 2026 — Hyvä Commerce’s Media Optimisation is the only zero-marginal-cost path.
| Provider | Annual cost | Pricing basis |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudinary — Plus plan | $3,948 | ~$329/mo. 225 credits, ~50k images + 50TB delivery. Overages at $0.10/credit. |
| imgix — Growth plan | $3,300 | $275/mo. Includes processed master images + bandwidth pooled across formats. |
| Cloudflare Images | $1,440 | $5/100k stored + $1/100k delivered. 50k images + ~12M deliveries. |
| Bunny Optimizer | $1,080 | $9.5/mo Optimizer + ~$80/mo CDN bandwidth for 50TB. |
| Hyvä Commerce 1.2 Media Optimisation | $0 | Included with Hyvä Commerce license. Conversion happens on your own server. |
What WebP and AVIF actually save vs JPEG
Same 1,200×1,200 PDP photo, four formats, visual quality matched in ImageMagick. The AVIF result is what Hyvä Commerce serves to modern browsers; the WebP result is the fallback for older Safari. JPEG and PNG are baselines for comparison.
Hyvä Theme vs Hyvä Commerce — the clarification
This is the single most-asked question. They are different products with different licenses and different scopes — you can run one without the other, you can run both, and you almost always should.
| Hyvä Theme | Hyvä Commerce | |
|---|---|---|
| What is it | Tailwind + Alpine frontend theme for Magento. | Bundle of admin + media + CMS modules. Sits on top of any Hyvä or Luma theme. |
| License | OSL3 + AFL3 — free, open-source since Nov 2025. | Commercial license. Pricing on request from hyva.io (tiered by GMV). |
| Affects | Storefront UI + checkout (with Hyvä Checkout add-on). | Magento admin + media pipeline + content workflow + CMS. |
| Target merchant | Any Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce store. | SMB → mid-market merchants (€1M–€100M GMV). |
| Use without the other? | Yes — runs on Luma admin perfectly. | Technically yes, but designed to ship alongside Hyvä Theme for full value. |
| Open source? | Fully open-source as of Nov 2025. | Closed-source commercial product. Source available to license holders. |
| Lock-in | None — standard Magento theme, removable. | Moderate — admin customisations + CMS pages need migration if you switch off. |
Which Hyvä product fits which GMV band
Who Hyvä Commerce is — and isn’t — for
You run Magento Open Source, you upload product images weekly, and you cannot justify a $3k/yr image CDN bill. Hyvä Commerce gives you a Tailwind admin + WebP / AVIF in one license.
Without it: Magento Open Source + free Hyvä Theme + paid Cloudinary subscription. Hyvä Commerce collapses those into one paid product.
You have a content team that needs Scheduled Releases, an in-house dev who wants a Tailwind admin, and a finance team watching the CDN bill grow. Hyvä Commerce 1.2 is built for you specifically.
Without it: Magento Open Source + Hyvä Theme + Cloudinary + Page Builder + custom dashboard tiles. More moving parts.
If you’re on Adobe Commerce, the right product is Hyvä Enterprise — the compat tier that adds Adobe’s B2B suite, customer segments, and content staging support on top of Hyvä Commerce.
Adobe Commerce + Hyvä Enterprise + Hyvä Theme. Different licensing, different SLA, different price point.
5-step migration path
Standard migration shape we use for SMB / mid-market merchants moving from a vanilla Magento Open Source + paid CDN stack onto Hyvä Commerce 1.2. Each step has a hard duration cap — if step 3 runs over a day, something’s wrong with the discovery in step 1.
-
01
Audit your current stack
1 dayInventory the paid CDN (Cloudinary / imgix / etc.), the admin customisations, and the CMS pages. Note what Hyvä Commerce will replace vs what stays. Cost-savings model based on real bills.
-
02
Install Hyvä Commerce
1–2 daysComposer-install the Hyvä Commerce 1.2 packages. Run setup:upgrade, deploy static content, flush cache. Verify the new Admin Dashboard renders alongside the default one (toggle either off later).
-
03
Configure Media Optimisation
0.5 daySet max dimensions per image role (PDP / category / thumbnail / wishlist). Choose output formats (AVIF + WebP fallback recommended). Configure quality and CLI worker concurrency.
-
04
Batch-migrate the catalogue
1 day + overnightRun the Media Optimisation CLI to regenerate all existing images into the new formats. 50k-image catalogue typically finishes overnight. Validate before/after sizes + Lighthouse score.
-
05
Cancel the old CDN, stabilise
1 weekOnce Media Optimisation has been serving in prod for 7 days with no Lighthouse regression, cancel the Cloudinary / imgix subscription. Train the content team on the new CMS + Launchpad.

Frequently asked
Is Hyvä Commerce the same as Hyvä Theme?
No — they are different products from the same company. Hyvä Theme is a free, open-source (OSL3) Tailwind + Alpine storefront frontend for Magento, released to free in November 2025. Hyvä Commerce is a paid commercial suite of admin, media, and CMS modules that sits on top of Magento Open Source. You can run Theme without Commerce, but most stores that buy Commerce also use Theme.
How much does Hyvä Commerce cost?
Hyvä doesn’t publish a public price — the license is sold direct from hyva.io and priced in bands by your annual GMV (typically €1M–€100M target band). Reach out to Hyvä or your Hyvä-certified partner for a quote. As a reference, the licence usually pays for itself within the first year of cancelling a Cloudinary / imgix subscription for a mid-market merchant.
What’s actually new in Hyvä Commerce 1.2?
The 1.2 release (May 2026) moves two flagship modules from beta to general availability: the Admin Dashboard (with Launchpad, Checklist, Links & Text widgets, and a Hyvä CMS Scheduled Releases overview) and the Media Optimisation suite (automatic WebP + AVIF conversion, configurable resizing, CLI tools for batch operations). Both have been hardened through months of merchant testing before this release.
Does Hyvä Commerce Media Optimisation replace Cloudinary?
For most SMB and mid-market stores, yes. Media Optimisation runs on your own server: it converts uploaded images to WebP and AVIF, resizes to admin-configurable max dimensions, and serves the right format per browser — no external service, no per-image cost, no bandwidth fees. The trade-offs vs Cloudinary are: (a) you handle the compute, (b) no on-the-fly URL transforms, (c) no DAM features. For a typical product-catalogue use case, those don’t matter.
Does the new Admin Dashboard replace the default Magento dashboard?
No — the framework is designed to coexist. You can enable Hyvä’s dashboard, the default Magento one, or both. Existing third-party admin extensions (Mageplaza, Amasty, custom Adobe Commerce Analytics widgets) keep working unchanged. The new dashboard appears as an additional choice in the admin landing-page configuration, not a forced replacement.
Which Magento versions does Hyvä Commerce 1.2 support?
Hyvä Commerce 1.2 supports Magento Open Source 2.4.7 and later (including the latest 2.4.9, released 12 May 2026). PHP 8.3, 8.4, or 8.5 is required. For Adobe Commerce, you need Hyvä Enterprise instead — that’s the compat tier that adds Adobe’s B2B suite, customer segments, and content staging features that Open Source doesn’t ship.
Can I batch-migrate an existing 50k-image catalogue?
Yes. Media Optimisation ships CLI tools specifically for that. Point the worker at your pub/media directory, set concurrency (usually 4–8 workers on a typical 4-vCPU VPS), and let it run overnight. A 50,000-image catalogue typically finishes in 6–10 hours. The originals are preserved — WebP/AVIF derivatives are generated alongside, so you can roll back per-image if quality issues arise.
What about browsers that don’t support AVIF?
Hyvä Commerce emits a <picture> element with the AVIF source, a WebP fallback, and the original JPEG/PNG as the universal fallback. Modern Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari 16+ all support AVIF. Older Safari and obscure browsers serve WebP (supported in every major browser since 2020). The ultimate fallback (~0.1% of traffic) still gets the original. No JavaScript needed.
Can I use Hyvä Commerce without Hyvä Theme?
Technically yes — the Admin Dashboard and Media Optimisation modules don’t depend on the Hyvä Theme storefront. You can install Hyvä Commerce on a Magento store running the default Luma theme. In practice, almost every Hyvä Commerce store also runs Hyvä Theme, because once you’ve adopted Hyvä’s tooling on the admin side you usually also benefit from the storefront performance gains.
How long does a typical Hyvä Commerce migration take?
For a typical SMB / mid-market merchant on Magento Open Source: 2–3 weeks end-to-end. That breaks down as 1 day audit, 1–2 days install + configure, 0.5 day Media Optimisation config, 1 day + overnight catalogue migration, and 1 week of post-launch stabilisation before cancelling the old CDN. Stores with heavy custom admin extensions or complex CMS layouts add 1–2 weeks for compat work.
Is Hyvä Commerce open-source like Hyvä Theme?
No. Hyvä Theme became fully open-source (OSL3 + AFL3) in November 2025, but Hyvä Commerce remains a closed-source commercial product. Source code is available to license holders for review, customisation, and forking within your team — you just can’t redistribute it. This is the standard model for paid Magento extensions.
Do I actually need Hyvä Commerce, or is the free Theme enough?
You probably don’t need Commerce if: (a) your store is under €1M GMV, (b) you don’t pay for an image CDN today, (c) you’re happy with the default Magento admin, and (d) you don’t use Hyvä CMS. You probably do need Commerce if: you pay > $1,000/yr for Cloudinary/imgix/Cloudflare Images, your content team complains about the Magento admin, or you want Scheduled Releases for marketing campaigns. The break-even is usually around €5M GMV.
