Oversized / LTL shipping — what’s the best integration?
Auto parts split into three shipping classes:
- Parcel — 95% of orders by count. Spark plugs, filters, sensors. UPS / FedEx / USPS via standard Magento shipping integrations.
- Oversized parcel — 4–5% of orders. Hoods, bumpers, exhaust kits up to ~150 lbs. UPS / FedEx oversized rates with dimensional weight. Use ShipperHQ for accurate dimensional-weight quoting (Magento native shipping rules don’t handle this well).
- LTL freight — 1–2% of orders by count, often 15–25% by revenue. Engines, transmissions, full bumper assemblies, suspension kits. Carriers: R+L Carriers, SEFL (Southeastern Freight Lines), Saia, FedEx Freight, YRC. Integration via FreightCenter API (multi-carrier, ~$200/mo + per-shipment fees) or uShip (auction-style for residential delivery).
Pattern: ShipperHQ + freight-class attribute per product. Each product has an NMFC freight class (50–500), ShipperHQ rates parcel + oversized in real time, FreightCenter API kicks in for LTL classes. Residential delivery surcharge auto-applies (LTL carriers charge $80–$150 extra for non-commercial addresses). Liftgate-required surcharge applies if order weight > 200 lbs and delivery is residential. Customer sees one shipping price at checkout regardless of which carrier wins. Hazmat (lithium batteries, brake fluid, refrigerants) flags trigger DOT-compliant labeling and restricted-carrier routing automatically.
