How do you plan for Dreamforce + Black Friday + Wine Harvest peak?
SF Bay has three concurrent autumn peaks nobody else has, and the calendar overlap is brutal. (1) Dreamforce SF (mid-September, 100k+ attendees at Moscone): hotel + restaurant + retail booking spikes, parking-app traffic explosion, conference-merch Magento stores get 10× normal in 4 days. We pre-test at 12× baseline two weeks before. (2) Wine Harvest Napa-Sonoma (mid-Sep to mid-Oct, 6 weeks): wine DTC stores see 25× normal traffic as wineries push current-vintage allocation. Cold-shipping windows are tight (temperatures drop below 75°F mid-Sep onwards); we pre-warm Redis cluster for inventory sync. (3) Black Friday + Cyber Monday (late November, biggest US peak): typical DTC store sees 50× normal weekend traffic. Our war-room recipe: synthetic load tests at 25× baseline using k6, Redis cluster + Varnish FPC with smart-purge, queue-isolated checkout on its own PHP-FPM pool, Stripe tokenisation for repeat buyers (80% latency drop on card forms), read-replica DB for browse + primary DB only on order placement, Fastly or CloudFront in front of Magento. Plus Mother’s Day (May) + Father’s Day (Jun) + Warriors NBA season (Oct-Jun for merch DTC).
